100+ Reading Challenge 2011

Okay, so this is my first (ever) challenge that I'm taking part in and it's the 100+ reading challenge 2011, hosted by My Over Stuffed Bookshelf. I read (and re read) quite a lot of books, so it'll be interesting to see how many I actually do read in exactly one year. There will be a page/tab/link (above the random buttons) called 2011: Bookshelf, where I will list all the books I have read each month. I'm not much of a reviewer, so I'm going to challenge myself to write a review each month.

For the full details of the challenge and to take part, click HERE and join in with the reading challenge =)

Wish me luck!

Sale shopping: What I got

Waking up at 3:30am yesterday in order to get to Next by 5:00am was definitely worth it. I'm not an impulsive shopper because I have to really think about the item, whether it will be worth buying and will I use it. Also, I'm more of an accessories person, and out of all that I bought, only one piece is clothing! We managed to get to two Next stores, so I'll list everything that I got from them. Compared to other people, I barely got anything at all, though there were some great bargains and this is what I picked up.

Side Bag-£6, Purse-£3, Perfume-£3, Candles-£2, Reed Diffuser-£2, Sweet Mango Lip balm-£1

Along side the Next stuff, I picked up a pair of trousers from River Island for £12 (bargain!). Managed to also get the Philosophy Lip Gloss Gift Set (from my wish list) at John Lewis and it was reduced down to £8.25. That's just over £2 per lip gloss, which is incredible. Bought a Papaya Lip Butter from Body Shop for £2 (can you spot the trend?) and the High Moisture Hemp Balm (not on sale). I think that I did pretty well, considering I was half asleep and it was still before 10am!

I also had a look around Debenhams, H&M, BHS and Zara, although I didn't manage to find anything in them, but there was definitely a lot more in the stores that was not displayed on the websites. All in all, I think it was a very productive sale shopping spree (even though my sister bought more than me!). I'll probably have go to all the local stores (Boots, New Look, Primark etc.) during the next two weeks, after the crowds have disappeared =)

Did anyone else go sale shopping?

Style Hijabified: Anne Hathaway

Today's style hijabified celebrity is Anne Hathaway. Her outfit is great, as it's so easy to replicate and adjust in order to suit the needs of a hijabi.

(click on the link above for product info)

I love Anne Hathaway's layering of the long blue tunic and the pale yellow cardigan. It's an easy way to include different colours into an outfit and cover up at the same time. In the Polyvore set, I've used the Stud Tunic Dress  and the Mink Boyfriend Cardigan, both from Dorothy Perkins. A pair of Black Diesel Bootcut Jeans completes the clothing, however any pair of bootcut/flared jeans or trousers would be suitable. Studded ballet flats provide the footwear to the outfit and  they also match nicely with the stud detailing on the tunic. I've included a blue scarf which contains gold and black stripes to compliment the outfit nicely. Accesorise with this cute Bouquet Pin from Hannah Zakari, and a long gold necklace that can be seen when worn under the hijab.

Boxing Day Sales

The Next Sale in particular.

Anyone who has ever been to boxing day sales will definitely know about the Next sale. I think they are the definition of post-Christmas sales. Standing in the cold waiting for the store to open at exactly 5am (if you're lucky it'll be a really small crowd, rather than an huge orderly queue complete with security and barriers). A mad rush to get inside and start shopping. People picking up whatever they can grab. Sitting in a corner trying to figure out if you can manage to make it across the store. Dealing with other shoppers who have just picked up what you were about to. Standing in the (ridiculously long) queue sorting out what you want and what you don't. Dumping what you don't want before you reach the tills. And then trying to get out of the store once you've finished paying. Then (if you're still in the mood for bargain hunting) finding another Next store and starting the process all over again!

This year, Next sales are starting on Monday 27th December, and most (if not all) stores will be open from 5am! (The online sale has already started). I'll be there on Monday morning along with the rest of the population who decide to brave the cold weather in order for some great bargains. I know Internet shopping is what it's all about at the moment, but there is just something special (or mad!) about being out and about shopping while the rest of the country is still fast asleep. And quite frankly, not everything on sale is listed on the website, so I'll be able to pick up what I want. If I can get to it =)

Good luck to all those who are braving the cold weather and going sale shopping. Have Fun =D

TGIF: Thank God it's Friday (or not)

Although it is the Christmas holidays, which does mean 3 weeks of freedom without having to travel on the London underground and sit in 2 hour lectures, I can't believe that one week has already finished! It's practically flown by! I suppose I'm only panicking because I haven't started revising yet, and that one last piece of coursework is still not complete (there's always one). If there was a career in procrastinating, it would be the perfect job for me! So yeah today is definately not a TGIF =/

Hope your Friday is better than mine. And to all those celebrating Christmas, Enjoy yourselves!

Haircut =)

Just because I wear a scarf on my head, does not mean that I don't/can't cut my hair. Personally, I prefer short(er) hair, simply because it's easier to maintain and puts less weight on my head. This is important because my hair falls out quite a bit, so less weight = less hair falling out. Currently my hair length is about 2-3 inches above my elbow. I'm thinking of getting it cut so it is a bit longer than shoulder length and probably with layers. That means I can still tie it up =) . Also, I kinda have a baldish patch along my hairline, where there really isn't a lot of hair so I'd like to have a side parting to cover that up (not that anyone will see it anyway!). Hopefully aiming for a haircut that looks something like this hairstyle on Emma Watson (however I only wish my hair was straight!)

What do you think?

Style Hijabified: Kate Bosworth

The Style Hijabified posts will basically be a hijabi outfit inspired by what celebrities are wearing/what the current fashion trends are. Enjoy!

(click on the link above for product information)

So I found this photograph of Kate Bosworth in a wonderful Valentino Haute Couture dress, and decided to make a Polyvore set from it. Not all of us can afford Valentino, however the Asos Lace Kaftan Sleeve Maxi Dress makes a very suitable alternative. It can be worn over a long sleeve basic top to cover the arms and chest. Pair the dress with lace ballet flats and this chiffon silk hijab from AabUK, and all you need are some coordinating accessories. I love the clutch bag as it looks like it belongs at a red carpet event and it is the perfect neutral/nude colour. I personally prefer silver jewellery over gold, and a statement ring or bracelet would really add a bit of glamour to the outfit.

Lipbalm Collection

What can I say...Some people collect stamps, others collect coins, I collect lipbalms (alongside other things). I thought I'd do a quick review post on the lipbalms that I do own =)

First up is my favourite and I'm consistently repurchasing. Regardless of how many flavours they do release, the formula is pretty consistent and works wonders. Of course I'm talking about Carmex! My favourite is the mint, however, I haven't tried the Strawberry Carmex yet, so that's the next one to buy. I prefer the tube version rather than the tin, as it's a lot softer, whereas in the tin the Carmex is solid, so it takes a bit of work to get some out. Some people don't like the smell, but I have to say it's not too overpowering.

Next is the Body Shop 'Born Lippy' lip balm in Passionberry. Yesterday, I thought I had lost the Passionberry one, so I went out and bought the Raspberry lip balm. Then I come home to find it sitting innocently at the bottom of my bag! I love the smell of the passionberry one because it is really fruity. Although the texture is kinda sticky, it doesn't really affect me much and this is one that I leave in my uni bag to carry everyday.

The other Body Shop 'Born Lippy'  I own is called Cool Mint. I don't think it's available any more and it is a shimmery white lip balm. It definately smells minty (a bit like toothpaste) and the texture is not as sticky as the Passionberry lip balm. However, it applies white onto lips, so I'm not a big fan of the Cool Mint (it's gonna take me ages to use!).

Another lip balm in my collection is the Nivea Lip Care Light Kiss. It's more of a cream than a balm, which makes it sort of a miss for me. The 'balm' is solid in the pot, but after you swirl your finger around, it becomes the consistency of something like watery cream (very thin). This makes it a really light 'balm' to use, however it's not very moisturing and doesn't last very long. It definately smells like Nivea cream, so I do like that. Personally I'm not a big fan of the product.

Next, I have the Candy Shop Lip Tin in Berry Pop from E.L.F cosmetics. Firstly, I have to say, this particular lip tin doesn't smell all that great. My sister owns the Candy Fix one, which smells a bit better, but I think they just have that chemically-enhance fruit smell, which is completely different to the Body Shop Lip Balms. The texture is sticky and feels a bit heavy on the lips, although it is moisturising on the lips. I think these Lip Tins have been discontinued by E.L.F. (they're not available on the website) but hopefully they'll bring out something similar because I do like the size and tin style of the product.

I think this product seems to be a staple in everyone's household. It's the Vaseline Lip Therapy! There's a range of Vaseline Lip Therapies available, each with added extracts to help soot and moisturise lips. They also come in both stick and tin form, which gives you a choice depending on which style you prefer. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Vaseline Lip Therapy, although they are there incase of an emergency (not that I'll be having one any time soon!) or if anyone asks if you have a lip balm/vaseline on you =)

The 'I love...Raspberry & Blackberry' Lip balm is a Lip Balm which is a sort of hit and miss for me. I bought this in Ethel Austin (before they shut down) however, the 'I Love..' range is now available in Superdrug. This balm smells okay, it's not too strong but it's not completely unscented. I find that the balm isn't moisturing enough for me, although it does give a faint pinkish tint to my lips, which is kinda cool.

lip balm collection (not a very clear picture)

So that's my (ever growing) collection of lip balms. What are your favourites and which one's do you not like so much?

Wish List (a.k.a. what I'm liking at the moment)

Okay, so I don't celebrate Christmas, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy shopping (window shopping!) for products that seem to be popular during the holiday season.

At the moment I'm looking at this: Philosophy - Under the Mistletoe lip gloss gift set. I love the cute, food related names and for the price of £16.50, it's practically a bargain. Considering that a single Philosophy lip gloss costs around £10.75, I'd say that a saving of £26.50 is well worth it.

Alongside lip gloss, I'm also checking out Pearl Daisy's Ali Baba trousers. I prefer the black/charcoal coloured ones rather that the blue, probably because I'll get more wear out of them instead.

I think that's pretty much it for this wish list, although with the post-Christmas sales coming up, there'll definately be a few more things that will have caught my eye!

TGIF: Thank God it's Friday

So, it's finally Friday!! I'm off to celebrate a friend's birthday tonight. A group of us will be going to the Caribbean restaurant Guanabana in Camden Town for dinner (providing none of us get lost on the way there).
The theme: Harry Potter. Literally. (see this post for the Harry Potter charm I made). Of course being an abaya wearing hijabi, makes this kinda easy, because an open style abaya can double up to be a robe (the wizard/witch style ones, not bath robe!). Now I just gotta figure out which Hogwarts House I should represent, so I can wear the appropriate colour hijab. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing everyone else dress up and in costume =)

Enjoy your Friday!

Hijabi Tip: Layering

Luckily, the art of layering clothes is a great way to keep warm during these winter months. Most hijabis do this on a daily basis, in order to keep their own style while being modest and appropriately covered. Long sleeve tops are a basic winter must-have. Primark, H&M, New Look and other high street stores offer a variety of colours and fabrics to choose from, so you can shop around for tops that you would feel comfortable wearing. Personally, I find the Primark long sleeve/stretch tops perfect because the material is not so thin that it doesn't keep you warm, but at the same time it's not ridiculously thick which means you can't layer over it.

For Example:

Here's a few of the tops you should be able to find:

Monday blues

Unfortunately it's Monday and the start of what might be an uneventful week. Coursework to be done, presents to be wrapped, reading for lectures and even more coursework to complete. Not to mention the freezing cold weather (without the snow!) and grey skies. Thank goodness Christmas holidays are only two weeks away =) (which should be filled with plenty of revising for January exams!)

Enjoy your Monday (if it's possible).

Boots Clearance

Boots Clearance is a store in Beckton Triangle Retail Park, East Ham. It's near to a big Sainsbury's and is right next door to a Next Clearance. When I get a chance, I do have a look around as they tend to have some good bargains. They have some pieces from the last makeup collections, as well as hair products, electricals, perfume, nail care and plenty of sun cream available. You can also find a range of beauty/body gift sets and products for kids, from pushchairs to toys.

Today, I managed to pick up Boots Skin Clear Oil Free Mattifying Lotion for £1, No7 Metallic Eye Pencil in Turquoise also for £1 and Britney Spears Believe Eau de Parfum (50ml, not 30ml) for £6.50. I'm actually surprised at the difference in prices, considering that the same products are also available in the main Boots stores at full retail price. Also, there is nothing wrong with the actual products (they're not faulty in any way!). In the past I've picked up eyeshadow testers in plastic packaging for 10p (will do another post on these in the future) and No7 mascara for £1.

If you're in East London at any point, try making it down to Boots Clearance. It's not the world's easiest place to find, but it's definately worth a browse and is a great place to get Boots products at bargain prices. The only downside is that if you see a product one week, chances are that if you go a week or two later, it won't be there anymore. So definately pick up things that you want if you see them!

Here's a look at the Metallic Eye Pencil:

This eye pencil is actually pretty good. It's soft in texture and bright in colour. It's softer than GOSH pencil liners, maybe closer in texture to Urban Decay. It's not exactly suited to my skin tone but I'll make it work somehow =)
Hope someone finds that useful!

Sleek LE Sparkle Palette

My sister randomly decided to buy me the LE Sleek Sparkle palette as she was coming back from college yesterday, claiming that she couldn't take it when I was going on about it (I wasn't really!). Anyways, the palette is amazing and contains 9 glitter and 2 shimmer shades along with 1 matt black. And they have names! The colour pay-off is great and they are really pigmented. Most of the colours are quite muted and dark although they would work well for a smokey effect. The standout shade has to be Cranberry (looks a bit like a raspberry pink glitter) and although I might not use this shade on my eyes, I would use it dabbed in the middle of my lips and then topped with a gloss (in my case this is No7 High Shine Lip Gloss in Smile). It just adds that extra bit of colour and sparkle =)

Also, £5.99 for 12 shades, you really can't go wrong (it's less than 50p per shadow!). Avaliable from Superdrug and Sleek Makeup.

Here are pictures of the packaging and the palette:

(Sparkly packaging without the glitter!)

(Unfortunately, the camera doesn't pick up the glittery-ness of the colours =/ )
Top row: Cranberry, Dream Maker, Galactic, Twinkle, Star Light, Noir.
Bottom row: Illusion, Festive, Mistletoe, Glitz & Glamour, Gold Ribbon, Tinsel.

Test yourself: Sporcle

I've been hooked on this website called Sporcle, which is basically a site filled with quizzes. And not just boring quizzes! They are actually pretty interesting, ranging from classic subjects (like science and history) to more amusing quizzes based on movies and entertainment. Of course, if you're like me then you'll use the search box and type in a random topic that you might want to test your knowledge on. In my case, that would be food and books. There's also a time limit in which you finish the quiz, and this ranges depending on the actual quiz. You even get daily quizzes, if you want to do them every day =D

Favourite Quizzes : Harry Potter Top 200 (first quiz I ever did), US States (which I am really bad at naming!), Elements Abbreviation (for the science nerd in me)

Hot Chocolate Recipe

My perfect hot chocolate recipe =)

Milk (measure out how much you want in a mug)
Hot chocolate powder (3-4 heaped teaspoons)
Double Cream (a small dash)
Sugar (to taste)
Hot Chocolate Toppings (marshmallows, cocoa powder, whipped cream, syrup etc.)

Heat milk and cream in a saucepan until hot, but not boiling. Add in hot chocolate powder and stir well (or hand whisk if you prefer). Add sugar if requires. Pour into a mug and top with toppings of your choice. =D

I find that this works best with Aero hot chocolate however, it can be used with any hot chocolate mix.

EDIT: Add one or two teaspoons of Nutella (or any chocolate spread!) when heating the milk and cream, to add a rmore chocolate-y taste.
