Work Style: What I Wear

It seems like ages since I've posted a Polyvore set on the blog! This set basically shows what I wear to work.

Everyday Work Wear

I've been mixing up my outfits, and swapping my usual abaya for maxi skirts and blouses/t-shirts as the weather gets a little warmer. I know this outfit may seem really casual, but I do work in a primary school, so casual and comfortable is the way to go! I'm slowly building up a collection of Converse and cardigans as I pretty much wear them everyday. Stretchy bead bracelets are an easy way to accessorise without adding too much. I like to wear a mix of different ones and stack them up with other bracelets (usually ones that I've made) =)

Hijabi Tip: Style Up an Abaya

So this is actually something that I recently discovered, and it's basically layering sheer tops over an abaya. At the moment there are all these lovely, flowy, chiffon blouses that are in style and they would be perfect for Muslimah's to wear, if only they weren't see through! So, I thought instead of wearing them underneath my abaya, why not wear them over the top, thus adding a little extra something to my usual outfit of a standard plain abaya. This might not be ideal in the winter, when you want to wear as many layers as possible (a lot thicker and warmer than chiffon), but it would be great once the weather starts warming up a little, and we can get rid of the layers on cardigans and jackets.

If you read MangoWhirl's blog, then you might have noticed in this blog post, that I'm wearing a red/burgundy colour sleeveless blouse, which I left unbuttoned on the day. The top is actually jersey at the front and chiffon at the back, with lace inserts on the shoulders (which was covered mostly by my hijab).

Here are a few blouses that I've found online, but there are a lot more available, depending on what colours and styles you like. I personally prefer the sleeveless blouses with a lower drape at the back =)

Shimmer and Shine is Charity Week's biggest Inter-University Ladies Fashion Event! After last year's successful event (which I unfortunately did not have the chance to attend), this year Shimmer and Shine is back again on November 4th to raise money for charity. All money raised will go to Islamic Relief towards helping orphans and needy children across the globe. For more information about the CW program, visit: www.onecharityweek.com.

Details:

DATE: Sunday 4th November (12:30pm onwards)
VENUE: St George’s University of London, SU area and Boardrooms, 2nd Floor Hunter Wing
CRANMER TERRACE, SW17 0RE

TICKET PRICE: £8 (Includes entrance to the fashion show plus a complimentary drink)

So, who's going to be attending? I am! In fact, I'll be behind a stall at Shimmer and Shine selling handpainted canvases =) The highlight of the day will be the unique fashion show which will demonstrate how a Muslimah can be modest and stylish at the same time. There will be henna and makeup artists alongside hair and hijab stylists! Of course, there's also stalls selling everything from jewellery to food and anything in between. Check out the Shimmer and Shine website (here), and the Facebook event page (here). Come and raise some money for charity week and enjoy a ladies day out. Why not come with a group of friends and have a day out =)

Autumn/Winter Boots : Bring on the Rain (not really)

I really need to go on a spending ban soon, as I've been buying quite a bit over the past few weeks. In my defense, I'm adjusting my wardrobe for the colder months which have arrived (a little too early for my liking).

My most recent purchase is this pair of High Leg Chelsea boots from New Look, which I purchased for just under £20 (with student discount). I chose the high leg boots as they will stop my feet and legs from getting wet when it's raining, especially as the bottom half of my abaya gets soaked (especially from the knees down). I love the brown colour, which is perfect for the Autumn/Winter seasons and they make a nice change from the usual black boots. These are also wide fit boots and have a low heel, which means that they are practical and comfortable, and also don't squash my feet (also perfect for wearing with thick, winter socks). Not too sure about how these will hold up when it starts to snow but I'll definitely be making use of these boots in the next few months (I have a separate pair of boots for when the snow arrives!) =)

(excuse the photo from the website. I couldn't get a decent picture with my camera)

Expect to see a few OOTD posts soon featuring these boots (especially as it's been raining quite a bit).

What do you think? Have you started wearing outfits from your autumn/winter wardrobe?

OOTD: Eid Gathering

Every year, I attend the annual Eid Gathering, which is organised by members of different families, and it is basically a way of us as a family (and a community) getting to know one another and to keep in touch as well as enjoy a meal. This basically means that I am in some way related to every single person that attends (which is pretty cool) even if I don't know who they are (I'm sure we have a mutual family acquaintance somewhere). The kids get given Eid gifts at the end and there is also a raffle for the adults, and it's a nice way to spend an afternoon as it might be the only time (other than at weddings) where I would meet these family members. And this year's Eid gathering was held yesterday and so I thought to show you what I wore to the lunch =)

The abaya is Bisht style (I think) and I love the brown border on the cuffs and neckline. It's made of a soft jersey fabric, but because of the cut and style, it doesn't stick to the body and therefore makes it extremely modest. I paired the abaya with a pair of lace ballet flats from New Look and wore the matching hijab in a simple wrap with a few folds. The only accessories were my side bag (again from New Look) and the F21 gold stackable rings. Simple yet stylish!

What do you think?

Hijabi Tip: Maxi Skirts

I don't tend to wear maxi skirts, as I'm pretty much wearing an abaya all the time, however for everyone who doesn't wear an abaya (or even those who do, and just want to mix up their outfits every now and again), maxi skirts are pretty much a staple piece in a hijabi's wardrobe. Although I don't wear them, I have to agree that they are modest (providing that they are not sheer!) and are extremely versatile as they can be worn dressed up or more casually. I would recommend going for a non-sheer maxi skirt, which is preferably made from a fabric that doesn't cling to the body (try to avoid ones made from jersey).

Here are a few maxi skirts that I've found which are currently being sold online (most of which are available in other colours) =)

Hijabi Tip:Maxi Skirts

For outfit inspiration featuring a maxi skirt, check out MangoWhirl, who has plenty of OOTD's as well as 3 ways to wear a black maxi skirt. Also see Aalia's (from hijabi with style) blog post for outift ideas when wearing a gypsy skirt, and the gorgeous outfit put together on the Hijablicious blog =)

Would you wear a maxi skirt? How would you style it?
