Hijabi Tip: Style Up an Abaya

So this is actually something that I recently discovered, and it's basically layering sheer tops over an abaya. At the moment there are all these lovely, flowy, chiffon blouses that are in style and they would be perfect for Muslimah's to wear, if only they weren't see through! So, I thought instead of wearing them underneath my abaya, why not wear them over the top, thus adding a little extra something to my usual outfit of a standard plain abaya. This might not be ideal in the winter, when you want to wear as many layers as possible (a lot thicker and warmer than chiffon), but it would be great once the weather starts warming up a little, and we can get rid of the layers on cardigans and jackets.

If you read MangoWhirl's blog, then you might have noticed in this blog post, that I'm wearing a red/burgundy colour sleeveless blouse, which I left unbuttoned on the day. The top is actually jersey at the front and chiffon at the back, with lace inserts on the shoulders (which was covered mostly by my hijab).

Here are a few blouses that I've found online, but there are a lot more available, depending on what colours and styles you like. I personally prefer the sleeveless blouses with a lower drape at the back =)

UnderMyAbaya: Winter Warmer

Haven't done an UnderMyAbaya post in ages! This one is inspired by the lack of sunshine and warm weather now that it's nearly winter here in the UK (just waiting for the snow to arrive).

 

AX Paris Patterned Sweater / Warehouse Straight Leg Jeans / New Look Buckle boots / Dorothy Perkins Bangle / Topshop Scarf

A cosy and comfortable under abaya outfit that's perfect for keeping me warm whilst not looking like I've got too many layers on (not that that's a bad thing). A knitted jumper dress/top worn with a pair of straight leg jeans that are tucked into the knee length boots (to avoid the whole soggy and uncomfortable trouser hems that are always a result of typical British weather). Accessorise with a simple bangle and a printed hijab to add something a little different and bring the whole outfit together.

It's easy to put an abaya (and probably a coat aswell) over the top of this outfit, and avoid looking too bulky.

OOTD: Eid

This is the outfit I wore for Eid! A gorgeous blue farasha with some (very heavy) diamante work on the neckline. I love the loose fit (it comes with ties on the inside to give the outfit some shape) and the flowiness of the material (it comes fully lined which is a major plus!). I wore minimal accessories, with only a few stackable rings and a silver clutch. Started off the day in nude heels, but for the evening I wore flat sandals as we were having a barbeque =)

Hijabi Tip: Hijab Storage Solution

A few months ago, I changed the way I store my hijabs. They used to be folded up in a drawer inside my wardrobe, which was okay, but everytime I wanted to look for a particular hijab, the entire drawer would be messed up. I'm pretty useless at keeping things organised, so colour co-ordinating them while they were stored in the drawer was not really an option. I ended up purchasing the Komplement Multi-use hanger from Ikea and so far I've managed to fit the majority of my hijabs onto the hanger. The more delicate hijabs are still kept folded up inside a drawer to prevent them from being damaged (beads tend to fall off). The hanger is hung from the back of my bedroom door, so I can easily pick which hijab I want to wear during the day.

Here's a picture of how the hanger looks. As you can see, I've managed to fit hijabs into pretty much all the available space!

It's not really organised in any specific way.

Just the more bulkier/heavier hijabs at the bottom, with the more lightweight hijabs at the top =)

Hijabi Tip: Maxi Skirts

I don't tend to wear maxi skirts, as I'm pretty much wearing an abaya all the time, however for everyone who doesn't wear an abaya (or even those who do, and just want to mix up their outfits every now and again), maxi skirts are pretty much a staple piece in a hijabi's wardrobe. Although I don't wear them, I have to agree that they are modest (providing that they are not sheer!) and are extremely versatile as they can be worn dressed up or more casually. I would recommend going for a non-sheer maxi skirt, which is preferably made from a fabric that doesn't cling to the body (try to avoid ones made from jersey).

HFW May 2012: Day 6 - Date Night

I'm not married, so this post will be a hypothetical date night outfit. I love dressing up, as well as wearing casual and comfortable clothes. My ideal outfit: something feminine, not too OTT, but subtle and sophisticated. Another Polyvore set as the weather is not my friend today =( (my idea of taking more photographs seems to have gone away with the sunshine). A simple maxi skirt paired with a coloured top (both in a flowy chiffon fabric). Accessoried with a single ring and cuff bangle, with a lace edged hijab and lace heels =)

HFW May 2012: Day 3 - Time Travel

The theme for day three of Hijabi Fashion Week is Time Travel! Bringing back something from the past and combining it with a recent item or trend. This is a tricky one as I regularly empty out my wardrobe of clothes that I don't wear anymore, so I don't actually own anything from the past =/ I do remember that while I was in secondary school, there was a trend of wearing the tiered maxi skirts (aka gypsy skirts), usually a neutral colour, and they were paired with bright coloured tops and accessories. So, I created a Polyvore set to represent this theme, using the tiered maxi skirt as the item from the past, and pairing it with the more recent trend of batwing sleeves. Accessorised with flat sandals, a simple hijab and purple friendship bracelets (playing on the school memories here). The overall look? Loose, flowy and 100% hijab friendly =)

HFW May 2012: Day 1 - Leaders in Hijab

Hijabi Fashion Week May 2012 has officially started and the theme for today is Leaders in Hijab!
So, what leadership roles do I have, and how do I dress for them? Well, you may know that I'm planning on becoming a teacher i'A, and as a way of preparing myself I'm currently a volunteer at a local primary school. As a volunteer, I don't have the authority and power of the teacher (or the headteacher), but I still have a significant role in the classroom to be a good role model. Obviously, working with younger children, it's a lot more appropriate to incorporate colour and prints into an outfit as this makes you more approachable (and less official looking, I think).

Hijabi Fashion Week May 2012

HFW is back again! Starting on May 28th through to June 3rd 2012, I'll be taking part (even though I have my final few exams during the first few days of HFW). HFW is a bi-annual event where each of the 7 days has a different theme and participants have to share an outfit that represents the theme of the day. InshaAllah this time around I'll be taking inspiration from fellow Muslimah's, such as Muslimah in Reverie and Hidden in Style who took part in HFW Nov 2011 and hid their face from view pre-capture (before taking the picture) which means there is no need for blurring out faces. To see my blog posts from HFW November 2011, click HERE. For this season, the themes are:
Day 1 [May 28] : Leader's in Hijab - What leadership roles do you have & how do you dress for them as a hijabi?

Day 3 [May 30] : Time Travel - Bring something back from the past and combine it with a recent item or trend!

Day 4 [May 31] : Destinations - If you could go anywhere for fun, where would you go & what would you wear?

Day 5 [June 01] : Special Occasions: Eid, formal etc. -  how do you stay modest when you need to get decked out?

Day 6 [June 02] : Date Night - What would be the perfect date with the (future) hubby?

Day 7 [June 03] : Style Crush - Choose an HFW participant's style to try out with your own clothes! Show us which participants inspired you, or mirror a style that you might never have tried before!

There are a few themes which were present (or similar) in HFW Nov 2011, although as it is now Spring/Summer time, the outfits will be different yet still modest and fabulous!
