Work Style: What I Wear

It seems like ages since I've posted a Polyvore set on the blog! This set basically shows what I wear to work.

I've been mixing up my outfits, and swapping my usual abaya for maxi skirts and blouses/t-shirts as the weather gets a little warmer. I know this outfit may seem really casual, but I do work in a primary school, so casual and comfortable is the way to go! I'm slowly building up a collection of Converse and cardigans as I pretty much wear them everyday. Stretchy bead bracelets are an easy way to accessorise without adding too much. I like to wear a mix of different ones and stack them up with other bracelets (usually ones that I've made) =)

UnderMyAbaya: Winter Warmer

Haven't done an UnderMyAbaya post in ages! This one is inspired by the lack of sunshine and warm weather now that it's nearly winter here in the UK (just waiting for the snow to arrive).

AX Paris Patterned Sweater / Warehouse Straight Leg Jeans / New Look Buckle boots / Dorothy Perkins Bangle / Topshop Scarf

A cosy and comfortable under abaya outfit that's perfect for keeping me warm whilst not looking like I've got too many layers on (not that that's a bad thing). A knitted jumper dress/top worn with a pair of straight leg jeans that are tucked into the knee length boots (to avoid the whole soggy and uncomfortable trouser hems that are always a result of typical British weather). Accessorise with a simple bangle and a printed hijab to add something a little different and bring the whole outfit together.

It's easy to put an abaya (and probably a coat aswell) over the top of this outfit, and avoid looking too bulky.

HFW May 2012: Day 6 - Date Night

I'm not married, so this post will be a hypothetical date night outfit. I love dressing up, as well as wearing casual and comfortable clothes. My ideal outfit: something feminine, not too OTT, but subtle and sophisticated. Another Polyvore set as the weather is not my friend today =( (my idea of taking more photographs seems to have gone away with the sunshine). A simple maxi skirt paired with a coloured top (both in a flowy chiffon fabric). Accessoried with a single ring and cuff bangle, with a lace edged hijab and lace heels =)

HFW May 2012: Day 4 - Destinations

Day four's theme for HFW is Destinations - where would you go for fun, and what would you wear? As I graduate this year i'A, I would really like to go on holiday, but with Ramadhan coming up and the start of the academic year not too far away, these plans might be on hold for a little while. I'd love to go anywhere with a warmer climate than the UK (away from the unreliable British weather). And this would be one of the outfits I would wear whilst on holiday, maybe relaxing in the sun, or out sightseeing (and shopping of course!). I wanted to take pictures of an outfit I'd planned for the theme, however in typical UK fashion, the weather has turned against me, and so I leave you with this inspired Polyvore set of my ideal outfit to wear on a holiday in the sun =)

[Of course, as the kaftan is sheer, I'd wear a thin cotton/jersey maxi dress underneath]

HFW May 2012: Day 3 - Time Travel

The theme for day three of Hijabi Fashion Week is Time Travel! Bringing back something from the past and combining it with a recent item or trend. This is a tricky one as I regularly empty out my wardrobe of clothes that I don't wear anymore, so I don't actually own anything from the past =/ I do remember that while I was in secondary school, there was a trend of wearing the tiered maxi skirts (aka gypsy skirts), usually a neutral colour, and they were paired with bright coloured tops and accessories. So, I created a Polyvore set to represent this theme, using the tiered maxi skirt as the item from the past, and pairing it with the more recent trend of batwing sleeves. Accessorised with flat sandals, a simple hijab and purple friendship bracelets (playing on the school memories here). The overall look? Loose, flowy and 100% hijab friendly =)

UnderMyAbaya: Casual Stripes

UnderMyAbaya: Casual Stripes by chocoholic-hijabi

Easy. Simple. Casual. Perfect.

An under abaya outfit that is casual yet still stylish (with an overload of stripes!) consisting of a striped t-shirt dress paired with straight leg jeans. Add some more stripes with silk bangles and a stripy pair of ballet flats. A plain grey scarf with a lace edge to add a girly twist and to balance out the colourful stripy-ness (is that even a word?) of the outfit. This outfit can be easily adapted depending on the weather by adding a long sleeve basic top underneath, or a cardigan over the top (preferably without stripes!) =)

Another under abaya outfit inspired by Spring and the gorgeous pastel colours associated with the season. Although completely inappropriate for Spring weather in the UK, this sleeveless bow detail dress can be worn layered over a long sleeve top or under a cardigan. Pair with white straight leg jeans and accessorise with shades of white and grey, with a grey hijab and a white clutch bag. Add more bow detailing with satin bow flats and a crystallised bow brooch. Finish off with a teal glass bead coil bracelet on one wrist.

This under abaya outfit is completely inspired by the Spring season which is (hopefully) just around the corner. I love the mix of pastel colours contrasting with the dark navy on the tunic alongside the woven brown belt. I paired it with wide leg pale pink trousers (although they look like an off-white), with the tunic layered over a long sleeve white top. Shoes and accessories in complimentary colours, with mint coloured ballet flats and a simple brushed gold bracelet. I decided to use two scarves in this Polyvore set, as I think the outfit would look nice with either of the scarves, and also with a layered scarf style using both of them.

Hijabi Tip: Jumpers and Sweaters

I don't know if you've ever had this issue, when you want to wear a jumper/cardigan/sweater but the sleeves on your abaya means that your arms look bulky and it can sometimes be uncomfortable.
Easy solution? Wear a sleeveless, t-shirt style or bandeau style maxi dress, which can be worn over a basic long sleeve top if you want/need arm coverage. Because of the sweater/jumper no one will know whether you are wearing an abaya or a maxi dress. You could even pair together a maxi skirt and long sleeve top (check out MangoWhirl's blog post on 3 ways to wear a black maxi skirt for inspiration and idea's).

Just a note: If the maxi dress is made of a jersey fabric, make sure to get a larger size so that it doesn't stick to you (and thus doesn't show your body shape) =)

HFW Nov 2011 - Day 3

Break the Rules: Abaya + Trainers

Actually, I was going to 'break' a different fashion rule, until I realised that it has become a fashion trend itself. Nevertheless, I have still incorporated this 'not-so-broken' rule into my outfit =)

Abaya and trainers are not really a good combination (in my opinion). Especially when you're wearing a fancy, blinged-out abaya (but I didn't wear mine for Today's theme). However, seeing as I can't walk in heels, and there are some days when I can't be bothered to wear flat shoes/boots, trainers are the only footwear option available (did I mention I hate showing my feet? That rules out sandals!). Anyways, here's my outfit for HFW day 3 =)

Also, the other not-so-broken rule is the mixing/clashing of colours and patterns. But like I said before, it's becoming the norm to wear different colours/patterns in an outfit.
