Project Shoebox

Project Shoebox started out as a small facebook campaign last year, aiming to collect 40 shoeboxes filled with essentials for Bromley Women's Refuge. The total was more than double the number of boxes and a few additional essential boxes to keep supplies stocked up. This year, Project Shoebox has grown and is again collecting items that can be given as aid/gifts to the women and children at the refuge.

As a compulsive hoarder, I emptied out most of my stash last weekend and filled two boxes (each one smaller than a shoebox) with a bunch of products, from unused cosmetics to sample sachets of lotions and more. The truth is that I definitely don't need any of them (especially when I already have a lot to get through!) so to pack them in a box and post them to the Project Shoebox address was the obvious thing to do. 😊

If you're thinking of doing a little clearing up and 'de-stashing', make sure you don't throw away anything you could possibly donate for a good cause.

Date for your Diary: Smoky Not Smudgy 2013

Smoky not Smudgy (SnS) is back again this year on Sunday 3rd November 2013! This year it's going to be bigger and better, with a larger pampering and souk area and not one, but two fashion shows. InshaAllah I'll be doing henna once again, so make sure to come and say hello =)

A date for your diary: Shimmer and Shine 2013

Shimmer and Shine is back again for it's annual inter-university ladies event! The beauty and fashion event of the year includes a fashion show, showcasing a wide variety of modest outfits, as well as a charity auction and a bazaar area. Smoky not Smudgy 2012 - who's going?

I am! InshaAllah I'll be doing henna at Smoky not Smudgy this year!

The fifth annual Smoky not Smudgy event is taking place this Saturday (17th November), from 12pm - 5pm. It is a ladies only pampering day, organised by the Islamic Society at Imperial College in order to raise money for charity. I've been to a few of the past SnS events, and let me tell you that they get bigger and better each year. There's a whole range of things to do, including attending the fashion show, having all the beauty treatments you could possibly want done (hair/makeup/nails/henna/facials/waxing etc.) as well as taking part in workshops, masterclasses and having a professional photoshoot at the end of it! There's also the souk area, where you'll be able to purchase goodies from a selection of companies and brands.

Who is attending Shimmer and Shine 2012?

After last year's successful event (which I unfortunately did not have the chance to attend), this year Shimmer and Shine is back again on November 4th to raise money for charity. Smiles Better Fundraising Dinner

So, last Saturday evening I volunteered to help out at the Smiles Better fundraising dinner, which was organised by Islamic Help and Pearl Daisy. I went along to do henna, but managed to get involved with a lot more! Alhamdullilah the event ran smoothly and was a success, with two fashion shows, an auction, and stalls, as well as a three course meal. It was held at The Ecology Pavillion in Mile End, which is located in Mile End Park.

For anyone who doesn't know about the Smiles Better campaign, it is a campaign which helps to provide support to victims of acid violence. The videos will explain the campaign in much better detail than I could possibly write out.

The Big Egg Hunt London

If you're following me on twitter, you would know that last Thursday I went to Covent Garden to see the eggs from The Big Egg Hunt. Between 21st February to 3rd April over 200 decorated eggs were displayed across London, and they were then all displayed in and around the Covent Garden Piazza until yesterday. The eggs were auctioned off and TBEH merchandise sold, helping raise awareness and money for the two charities Action for Children and Elephant Family. Last year, there were elephants displayed around London, and this year's eggs are a symbol that represent new life, a fresh start and hope for the future. I thought it would be fun just to see all the different designs and creations, while recording how many I could actually find.

Give and Makeup: Blogger's donation

Give and Makeup is a non-profit initiative whose sole purpose is to get everyday essentials into the hands of women and children who need them the most. Bascially the idea is donate clean new and lightly used beauty products which are then delivered to organisations like Women's Aid and Refuge, and are then passed on to the women who need them. A general list of products that they need can be found here.


Two weeks ago, another blogger meet-up and product swap took place at Westfield White City, where all the bloggers who came bought beauty products that they were willing to part with and swap for other items. After we had finished swapping, we were left with a bunch of products that we didn't know what to do with. Lucky me had the job of carrying them home. Normally in my house all the clothes/shoes/books/unwanted gifts etc. go into a charity bag that is then taken to a local charity shop or collection bin (like the one's in the Sainsbury/Tesco car park). That was the original destination for this bag of beauty products, until I remembered that Give and Makeup were looking for donations which included beauty products.

If you live in the UK, you can easily post out boxes/parcels to a number of locations, or drop them off providing you notify them first.
